You will be surprised to find that Coal Harbour, Vancouver is a calm neighbourhood despite its location on the water’s edge in the heart of downtown. This small area also has an industrial history since it served as a shipyard in the past with a railway terminus sitting right next to it. This neighbourhood begins at Canada Place and extends to the west to Stanley Park. West Georgia Street borders it to the south and Burrard Inlet to the north.

Coal Harbour is home to both the condo towers and the Vancouver Convention Centre and includes a charming mix of residential and business homes. When you visit this area, you will likely find tourists and locals hanging out on the seawall where you may be able to get a glimpse of a harbour seal bobbing in the water and greeting those who pass by. There is also a popular marina, restaurants, cafes, and much more.

Things to See and Do

The Vancouver Convention Centre is a great place to start if you enjoy taking walks and not visiting the city on business. You will have a chance to view a wide range of public art to get a sense of the harbour’s history by viewing the interpretive plaques which can be found on the surrounding section of the seawall. There is also Jack Poole Plaza which is a great place to visit because it is the home of the Olympic Flame which was carried during the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games.

Take a stroll to Stanley Park and enjoy watching the harbour life as you take a seat on a park bench. You will enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery as you view cyclists riding by, floatplanes landing, and boats cruising by. Harbour cruises are also available if you want to take to the water or you can even board a seaplane which offers “flightseeing” tours to give you a glimpse of the city from above.

Food and Drink

When you are in this neighbourhood, it is a good idea to hang out with the locals to find the best food and drink. You will find that this area offers casual dining and spots that are slightly more upscale. Along the sea wall, you will find excellent cafes and larger restaurants as you head towards the convention centre. There is also an area for fine dining which can be found at one of the high-end hotels that are located along the waterfront and on adjacent streets as well. If you just want something on the go, you can easily grab some food from a neighborhood supermarket and grab a park bench to enjoy the scenery.

If you are ready to quench your thirst, there are several pub-style spots on the edge of the convention centre as well as the waterfront.

Souvenirs and Shopping

You will find many locally-owned stores in the area that sell souvenirs and many other items that you can take back home in your suitcase. B.C tipple is a drink you can find at any local liquor store, and it is a favorite souvenir that visitors in Coal Harbour love to take back home.
