Today, the Kitsilano area of Vancouver is largely occupied by families and young professionals, although back in the days of the ’60s, this neighborhood was the undisputed hippy hub of the city. Locals know this area as ‘Kits’ and the parks, beach, commercial districts and pleasant residential streets located just the other side of the Burrard bridge from downtown still manages to retain a relaxed and appealing atmosphere. West Broadway and West 4th Street are home to most of the area’s commercial activity, although the neighborhood, in general, can be said to be bordered to the west by Alma Street, to the east by Burrard Street, to the south by West 16th Street and to the north by the waterfront. Kitsilano has several attractions and sights, several pleasant parks, plenty of restaurants and shops by the beach and is where the worldwide yoga brand of Lululemon Athletica was born.

What To See and Do

Vanier Park is perhaps best known as being the home of the city’s popular summer Shakespeare festival, known as the Bard on the Beach, although it’s also home to several other top family-friendly attractions. Located in this large green space along the waterfront are the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Vancouver and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. During summer, Kitsilano Beach is the place to be, and as well as people watching, you can enjoy relaxing with a picnic or playing beach volleyball. There is a large public pool containing saltwater for those who don’t like swimming in the open sea. The Khatsalano festival and Greek days are just two of several popular community festivals that take place in Kitsilano during the summer months.

Where To Eat and Drink

For a great selection of casual neighborhood restaurants and bars, head to Cornwall and Yew Streets, where you can expect a great choice of cocktails and wine, and some of the freshest seafood in Vancouver. Many Greek immigrants to the city originally settled in and around West Broadway, and if you fancy some authentic Greek cuisine, that is the place to wander. More ethnic dining options can be found along West 4th Street. Expect to find a good selection of restaurants and cafes offering farm to table menus, organic and healthy options, as this was once the hippy heart of Vancouver. And one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in the city is still thriving; the Naam is open 24 hours a day and has become known for its yam fries and miso gravy.

Where to Shop

Head to West 4th Street for a great selection of spas, boutiques, skincare companies, outdoor clothing stores and more, along with the Lululemon store offering activewear. The area has a good selection of specialty grocers, gourmet food stores, and wine shops and if you love the miso gravy at the Naam, why not take a couple of bottles home? Independent stores and some gift shops can be found along West Broadway, and the area still has an emphasis on independent and locally owned stores.
